EVA Air Flight Attendant’s Death Under Investigation Amid “Leave Pressure” Allegations

A 34-year-old EVA Air flight attendant, identified as Sun, reportedly fell ill during duty last month and later sought medical attention at a clinic. After returning home, her condition worsened, and she was hospitalized on September 26. She passed away ten days later.

Following the incident, Taiwan’s Ministry of Labor launched an investigation into EVA Air’s working conditions and shift policies. Preliminary findings indicated that the airline’s working hours and rest periods complied with legal standards. However, officials noted that certain types of leave might influence employee performance evaluations — raising concerns about potential pressure to avoid taking time off.

Investigators are now interviewing the cabin crew and the purser who were on duty that day to determine whether Sun’s request for medical assistance was denied or if she was pressured to continue working despite her illness.

EVA Air expressed deep regret over the employee’s death, stating that an internal investigation is underway and that the airline is fully cooperating with authorities.
